IOC wants free internet for China games

Wednesday, April 2, 2008

The Internet must be open during the Beijing Olympics. That was the message a top-ranking International Olympic Committee official delivered Tuesday to Beijing organizers during the first of three days of meetings - the last official sessions between IOC inspectors and the Chinese hosts before the games begin in just over four months.

Beijing routinely blocks Chinese access to some foreign news Web sites and blogs, a practice it has stepped up since rioting broke out over two weeks ago in Tibet.

-AP Sports Writer, Stephen Wade

China's cramping on NBC's television coverage seems to have the International Olympic Committee worried that their communications will be hampered by the Communist government. I guess they want to make sure their twitter tweets aren't going to be censored!

China bans YouTube video of China protests

Sunday, March 16, 2008

Wired.com reports that China is banning YouTube because of videos that are surfacing of the Tibet riots. I guess the Chinese government just can't handle the truth.

And with the censorship of news coming out of China and Tibet, will we ever know what happens at midnight tonight? China has announced that rioters have until midnight to turn themselves in. But then what?

Economist writer, James Miles writes
:
The worry now is about tonight’s deadline. Will this be followed by knocks on doors and sweeping, indiscriminate arrests? Many Tibetans keep pictures of the Dalai Lama in their homes. I imagine now that they are busy secreting them.

This is the year 2008?

Electricity doesn't come from magic

Tuesday, February 26, 2008

The expected introduction of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles could cut U.S. gasoline use but could increase deadly air pollution in some areas, two reports say.

That's because a plug-in's lower tailpipe emissions may be offset by smokestack emissions from the utility generating plants supplying electricity to recharge the big batteries that allow plug-ins to run up to 40 miles without kicking on their gasoline engines.

-By James R. Healey, USA TODAY

I have been arguing this downside to the electric car for a while now. What they also don't mention is the increased strain on the electrical grid. In Southern California, we already have enough trouble keeping the A/C on in the summer. What happens when we are all running A/C and have our cars plugged in?

Of course, the electric car is the perfect choice for a country like France that has overcome their fear of nuclear power. We must overcome that fear and realize that 20 or 30 years of technology is making nuclear power much safer than it was in the 70's and 80's.
