Busy weekend ahead!

Wednesday, March 26, 2008

My buddy, David, says that he likes the frequency of my posting.....or should I say "liked"? I've not been posting much lately. It's a combination of doing a lot of other things, boring news and media, and being kind of busy. It's all good. I suppose that blogging isn't really that important.

A lot of my time has been spent with my guitars for the last couple of weeks. I've been learning and practicing a bunch of new songs in preparation for this weekend.

Speaking of that, I'm pretty stoked about this coming weekend. My sister Sheri is flying into town, and my good friend Rhett is flying down from Washington. We are all getting together this weekend to work our way through learning a bunch of songs from Sheri's upcoming CD, and get ready to go out and lead at a few gatherings here and there. Melisa is going to be playing keys and our awesome friend, Drew (recently married to Abbie!) is going to playing bass! This should be a lot of fun, but a lot of work.

Sheri and the rest of us on her team are so glad to be doing our first event together at my home church, Live Oak Vineyard, this Sunday night. It will be the first time that this group of people will be leading together as one unit, so it's nice to begin in a familiar, safe place with people who are behind us.

I wish Joshua could make the trip. We'll miss you, brother!

And I do hope that a good number of people from the Live Oak Worship team would be willing to come to the worship gathering on Sunday evening to worship with us, and pray for Sheri and the team she has drawn together. I think that it would be great for a group of worshipers to come and pray for her as she is on the verge of an album release and beginning a series of events. I know that she cherishes the prayers and support of her extended Vineyard family all across the country.

Not only is he a smokin' drummer, he's a connoisseur of cheesy crackers!

I'm also excited about Sunday. Rhett is going to be able to sit in on drums on Sunday morning. We spent almost four years playing music together and becoming great friends. I miss that guy a lot, and I'm excited to be able to lead worship with him this week! I just wish he could bring his wife, Molly, because it's been too long since we've all had a chance to get together in one place. Melisa and I will just have to figure out a way to make it up to Washington this summer to see all of our Washingtonian brethren instead.

Rhett and Molly.....this picture is way old, but the best I've got....sorry!

I've got to finish up my set list for Sunday. Does anybody have a song on their heart that they really want to sing to God this weekend? Let me know. The set is hardly carved in stone yet.

Food so good, I took a picture

Saturday, March 22, 2008

This is Melisa's Dijon-Mushroom Chicken. This is my new favorite recipe that Melisa has been making, and I had to take a picture of it. Mmm, mm, good!

I'm just not a basketball guy any more

I grew up in Indiana. I am...a Hoosier by birth. I used to watch and play basketball day and night. My dad put up a basketball hoop for me at all the places we lived growing up. But somewhere along the way, I lost interest. I'm not sure why, exactly.

I've tried to get a little excited about March Madness this spring, but it's not working. I'm too excited that Formula 1 and Indy Car are getting started in March. I'm just too much of a racing guy now.

It is interesting how something that seemed so important to me just years ago is not something I care to follow a any more.

Question of the day: What are some old interests you don't follow any more, and what new interests have you picked up?

China bans YouTube video of China protests

Sunday, March 16, 2008

Wired.com reports that China is banning YouTube because of videos that are surfacing of the Tibet riots. I guess the Chinese government just can't handle the truth.

And with the censorship of news coming out of China and Tibet, will we ever know what happens at midnight tonight? China has announced that rioters have until midnight to turn themselves in. But then what?

Economist writer, James Miles writes
:
The worry now is about tonight’s deadline. Will this be followed by knocks on doors and sweeping, indiscriminate arrests? Many Tibetans keep pictures of the Dalai Lama in their homes. I imagine now that they are busy secreting them.

This is the year 2008?

Atlanta Hail....

You've got to check out pictures from my sister's place in the outskirts of Atlanta. They had some serious hail fall yesterday in a series of dangerous thunderstorms and tornados. Thank God that all of our family is safe after these storms. Check out the picture of the flowers. One of the hailstones looks about the size of a tennis ball!

Atlanta rocked by tornado

Saturday, March 15, 2008

Sheri (my sister) reports this morning:

It's a stormy weekend here in Atlanta - I've never heard it thunder for like 24 hours nearly non-stop. crazy.

My wife has a lot of family in the Atlanta area, but everyone is OK. The Georgia Dome had part of its roof ripped open! Crazy.

Update 11AM: Sheri called, and a tornado just blew over their house. She said they are in the clear now, but we were praying for their safety. Let's all pray that these storms calm down!

I've been dubbed

Sir Scott. Ben dubbed me "a knight" on MySpace Facebook or something. I must admit, I'm honored to be Knight on Facebook, even though I don't have a real profile picture.

I'm always lagging behind on these social website thingies. I just got my MySpace profile all set up with real pictures, and a cool background.......and now Facebook is en vogue.

Love this site: Alltop.com

Wednesday, March 12, 2008

Alltop.com is a pretty cool site if you want a bunch of links to top stories. If you are an ultra-twitter nerd, they even have a "Twitterati" page. That's way too nerdy for me, but I found the link to the Sixpence at SXSW story there. Check it out: Alltop.com

The Cross

Monday, March 10, 2008

I'm doing "small group prep" for our meeting tomorrow night, so I'm digging into some good stuff right now. Since we are quickly approaching Holy Week, the point of discussion this week will be The Cross.

"But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ." - Eph. 2:13

The message of The Cross is so powerful. It was a moment in time with eternal repercussions that defied rational thought, rendered sin powerless, and made it possible for everyone to come near to God. And the message of The Cross has so many facets.

John Piper digs into these facets in his book, "The Passion of Jesus Christ". In his devotional-style book, Piper writes 50 chapters that demonstrate 50 different reasons why "Jesus came to die".

Home group is only supposed to be 90 minutes, so I can't exactly go into all of these reasons, but I tried to come up with my "Top 5" reasons from the Top 50 reasons Jesus went to the cross:
  1. To show the wealth of God's love and grace for sinners
  2. To show His(Jesus') own love for us
  3. To learn obedience and be perfected
  4. To create a people passionate for God's works
  5. So that we might belong to Him
For some reason, #3 really stood out to me. I had never thought of this one, but it's so true and so powerful to know that because Christ faced temptation, faced hunger, faced horrible pain and death, that he is truly our Savior that can identify with us.

I'd go into this more, but some of you will be there tomorrow evening. If not, dig into the Word and remind yourself how powerful the message of The Cross, and the act of obedience and love that Jesus carried out there.

Indy Cars - 1933

Some of you know that I'm a huge motorsports fan, especially a fan of Formula 1 and Champ Car racing (and Indy Car back in the 1980's and 1990's before the Indy Car/Champ Car split).

In case you don't follow motorsports, the split is over, and Champ Car is now back in the Indy Car fold. Now the question is, what will the series look like in the future with more cars, more drivers, and more teams.

Click on picture for full size image

I stumbled across this picture of Luther Johnson in a 1933 Indy Car. And all I can say it, "Wow". What a gorgeous car, a symbol of a bygone era.

Let's race these cars again. What do you say?

By the way, I've never seen a race car with "duely" tires! Weird.

Andy Park Writes About Compassionart

Tuesday, March 4, 2008

Andy Park writes:

Last week I had the privilege of participating in a songwriting event unlike anything I’ve ever done before. It all started about 18 months ago when Martin Smith, front man for Delirious, had a vision to start a charity that would be a vehicle for artistic works to be donated to the world’s poor.

About a year ago, twelve songwriters enthusiastically agreed to be part of songwriting and recording project that would be 100% given away. The list of writers: Paul Baloche, Steven Curtis Chapman, Stu Garrard (Delirious?), Israel Houghton, Tim Hughes, Graham Kendrick, Matt Redman, Martin Smith (Delirious?), Michael W. Smith, Darlene Zschech and me. Chris Tomlin was intending to come, but had to cancel because of illness. From the start, the chance to participate in this event felt like a gift.

"Senior Night means the senior players' parents and family are in the fieldhouse, and it's a night for emotional pre-game recognition and post-game speeches. It's an awesome and touching thing to see. The last play before the last time-out was a long three-pointer by senior Russell Robinson, and the camera cut immediately to his parents in the stands, with their fists in the air and broad smiles on their faces, beaming with pride, joy and love for their son, who is playing his heart out, and clearly having the time of his life.

I couldn't help but think that this is a picture of our Father's love for us when we are doing the thing he made us to do."

“As with most things, for Americans religion is a consumer product, so it’s not brand loyalty you can rely on. It’s marketing, location, and other things. Denominations have been slow to react to that.”

Live Oak Vineyard - March 2nd Set

Sunday, March 2, 2008

What a wonderful morning at Live Oak Vineyard, at least for me. I felt God's presence today in the worship, in the teaching, the Eucharist, and the fellowship. Our special guest, Daniel Hernandez, did a great job on guitar, and is just an amazing guy to hang around. What a blessing to get to know him. If you haven't met him yet, come to Live Oak on the first Sunday in April. Daniel will be leading some songs that morning, and he will be doing some of them in Spanish. Daniel is from Venezuela, and plans on planting a church there in the near future.

Here was the set list for this morning:

1. Love Me Like You Do (VMUSA)
2. Nothing But The Blood (Redman)
3. Oh The Glory of It All (Crowder)
4. Holy God (Doerkesen)
5. How Great Is Our God (Tomlin)
6. Be The Center (Ministry Time) (VMUK)

For me, "Oh The Glory of It All" was a highlight. Of course, I love doing new songs, because they bring something fresh. I think they also shake things up a bit, and make us really read the words, and think about what we are singing. The song speaks of redemption, repair, and the renewal God brings to our life. I hope that it resonated with the congregation the way it resonated with the team. It's a song that has blessed me so much.
