Electricity doesn't come from magic

The expected introduction of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles could cut U.S. gasoline use but could increase deadly air pollution in some areas, two reports say.

That's because a plug-in's lower tailpipe emissions may be offset by smokestack emissions from the utility generating plants supplying electricity to recharge the big batteries that allow plug-ins to run up to 40 miles without kicking on their gasoline engines.

-By James R. Healey, USA TODAY

I have been arguing this downside to the electric car for a while now. What they also don't mention is the increased strain on the electrical grid. In Southern California, we already have enough trouble keeping the A/C on in the summer. What happens when we are all running A/C and have our cars plugged in?

Of course, the electric car is the perfect choice for a country like France that has overcome their fear of nuclear power. We must overcome that fear and realize that 20 or 30 years of technology is making nuclear power much safer than it was in the 70's and 80's.

Lead Us On - What I took away

Once in a while, God does a "re-alignment" on your life. Maybe it's through something you read, or an experience, or God speaks to you so clearly, that something changes in your life. For me, a re-alignment of my life happened at this weekend's "Lead Us On" conference in Pomona.

Andy Park came into town to co-lead a conference with Terry Butler. These guys are two of the most anointed, gifted, and experienced worship leaders and writers in the Vineyard movement, and in contemporary worship. They brought a two-fold purpose into the sessions. One aspect was in teaching and encouragement, and the other was to lead the conference in extended times of worship.

Andy and Terry brought messages of "resting in the Lord", of remembering the poor, and the Love of the Father. The messages were simple, but the ministry and worship times were powerful.

Saturday night's final session was an amazing experience. I had the chance to play guitar with the team, and I was like a kid in the candy store to be a part of that session. The presence of God was amazing, and the joy in that room was palpable. The worship time lasted for about 2-1/2 hours as God took us on a journey through the leadership of Andy and Tony.

My frame of mind, my heart, my strength changed so much in only 24 hours, it is hard to believe. It makes me realize how important it is to stay connected to these kinds of events, and to continue being refilled frequently.

Heading off to sleep....

Friday, February 22, 2008

We got back from the opening session of "Lead Us On" tonite. Andy Park led worship tonite, and it was a great time. Terry had a great word for worship leaders, I must say. If you are a worship leader in the LA area, you really should come out to hear Andy's message tomorrow.

Here's the info.

I'm off to bed. Catch me later.

Saturday Night Live has been gone for so long that you’ll never know who its Mitt Romney impersonator was going to be.

The writers strike-imposed absence of the NBC institution ends this weekend with the first of four straight weeks of new shows, the first time that breakneck schedule has been tried since 1976.

I don't believe in Karma, but if I did....

The nation's top federal election official told Sen. John McCain yesterday that he cannot immediately withdraw from the presidential public financing system as he had requested, a decision that threatens to dramatically restrict his spending until the general election campaign begins in the fall.

The prospect of being financially hamstrung by the very fundraising system he helped create is the latest in a series of bitter challenges for the presumed GOP nominee, who still faces a fractured conservative coalition as he assumes the mantle of party leadership.

-Matthew Mosk and Glenn Kessler, Washington Post Staff Writers

The McCain-Feingold legislation comes back to bite who? That's right, it bit Mr. McCain right in the rear-end. If I believed in Karma, this would be a perfect example.

Stoplight sting to be held in Pasadena

PASADENA - Police will be holding a stoplight enforcement program throughout the city today, officials said.

The program will be carried out between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m., police said in a written release.

The purpose of the operation is to reduce the number of crashes resulting from drivers running red lights, police said.

Funding for the red light enforcement program is being provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Americans are so busy, we don't golf any more

On the heels of a 60 minutes report on the business of the American lifestyle, the NY Times is reporting that 3 million Americans stop golfing every year.

I played for my high school's varsity team in golf, but I gave up the sport after high school. I mostly stopped because it was too costly in time and money to maintain a competitive game. And now that I'm in LA, I plan on picking up golf when I leave the state in 20 or 30 years.

The NY Times story mentions that other sports have gained popularity, so perhaps some people are out kayaking or something. I'm mostly watching re-runs of Ramsey's Kitchen Nightmares, so it's not me.

I almost forgot......!

I almost forgot to mention that I bumped into an old Valpo Vineyard friend last night at The Roxy. I stepped up to the bar for some refreshments, and turned around to take a look at the band rocking out on stage, and Nathaniel Balon was seated at his sweet Slingerland kit ON STAGE AT THE ROXY! It was surreal. Nathaniel is now rockin' the LA scene, and it was so sweet to bump into him at the Hotness show.

Sweet Home, Chicago

Mrs. Sara shared this photo from her back yard in my old hometown in Indiana. Very pretty, and darn it....we don't get snow days in LA! This is about the time of year when the depression of late-winter doldrums would set in for me when I lived in the Midwest. February usually teases you with some warmer temperatures, and then completely blind-sides you with a blizzard late in the month. It looks like Old Man Winter is up to his old ways.

Can You Feel Me!

Holy shneikies, did The New Hotness completey blow the doors of The Roxy in Hollywood last night. They pretty much burnt my eyebrows off my face last night with their Rock-Onslaught! The power-trio can truly bring the rock, and do it with a way that is both familiar yet has an original edge.

Eric Newton, lead vocals and guitar, has a voice made for rock-and-roll, and has some serious guitar chops. Not only that, but he's not afraid to use effects and be creative with his sounds.

John K. on bass is a blast to watch, as he is the most mobile of the bunch on stage. His rockstar stage-presence is one of the keys to the Hotness being such a fun show. His no-nonsense rock sound is the perfect fit in this trio.

John K. pairs up with my friend Jared on drums to create a tight rhythm section. Jared, of course, was on it last night. The guy's amazing. He can rock on guitar, and last night I found out just how good he is on drums. Not only that, but he isn't afraid to sing BGV's with John K., and that was fun to watch, too.

If you live in LA, be sure to come out and see them this month. They have a few more shows coming up at clubs in Hollywood. You can also listen to a lot of their latest CD on their myspace page. Check them out at http://www.myspace.com/thenewhotnessrocks to get it all.

60 Minutes: Why Americans Are Unhappy

Harvard lecturer Tal Ben-Shahar offers some simple steps to being happy....some are new-age-y, but most are right on. What I agree most him on (as he said in later segments) is that the American rat-race is the reason so many of us struggle to find balance and happiness. And as a Christian, I find that the combination of career and the distractions of the American lifestyle are in direct contradiction with a lifestyle of Christian discipline that includes enough quiet meditation.

Wow, I'm sitting on my couch and relaxing after a long day of work.....at home! I've been so busy lately that it seems like a vacation to have an evening off. It's great!

I should get some extra sleep tonite, because Melisa and I are hoping to be able to catch The New Hotness tomorrow night at The Roxy! Our buddy, Jared, is the drummer for the Hotness, and we haven't been able to catch any of their recent shows, mostly because I've got such an early work day. But the time has come to see these guys rock out, and the Roxy is one of our favorite clubs.

Starship Dave

Thursday, February 14, 2008

The Eddie Murphy family comedy Meet Dave (formerly titled “Starship Dave“) has been moved back from May 30th to July 11th. Dave was originally set to go head to head with Sex and the City: The Movie, and will now compete with Hellboy II: The Golden Army and Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D. Paramount’s Ben Stiller comedy Tropic Thunder was originally set to open on this July date, but was moved to August.

I'm a "textbook melancholy", as one friend once told me

At the behest of well-meaning friends, I have purchased books on how to be happy. I have tried to turn my chronic scowl into a bright smile. I have attempted to become more active, to get away from my dark house and away from my somber books and participate in the world of meaningful action. … I have contemplated getting a dog. I have started eating salads. I have tried to discipline myself in nodding knowingly. … I have undertaken yoga. I have stopped yoga and gone into tai chi. I have thought of going to psychiatrists and getting some drugs. I have quit all of this and then started again and then once more quit. Now I plan to stay quit. The road to hell is paved with happy plans.

-Eric G. Wilson, author of Against Happiness, argues for the vital need for sadness in the world.

As a "textbook" melancholy, I enjoyed this article from NPR.com, and makes me interested in the book Mr. Wilson has written. Think of all the art, the music, the Psalms, that wouldn't have been written if the authors would have been jacked up on Ritalin or something else that was supposed to make them less unhappy.

I'm not taking a cheap shot at those who do truly need meds, but Wilson points out that human society wants to squash out unhappiness, and create a false happiness. I know that I can be a cranky, crotchety person sometimes when I'm in one of my moods, but sometimes I'm in those moods because I'm actually contemplating life, and not caught up in a false sense of happiness.

Your thoughts?

Likeness of You Update - Feb 11th

Monday, February 11, 2008

Ok, so I know some of you (DAVID!) are amped up about hearing Melisa's demo of "Likeness of You", but you'll just have to be patient. We have the drums and guitars done, and have to do the final bass and vocal tracks sometime later this month. I have the first rough mixes put together and so far it sounds great! I'm really proud of my wife for stepping out and risking and stretching to write a song and share it with everyone.

Melisa and I really owe a lot of thanks to Steve for his Pro Tools experience, mics, and his 002 rig, and for playing tracks and giving up his Saturdays. Steve, we owe you a case of Diet Coke! And of course, Billy-Boom-Boom (aska my father-in-law), your drum tracks are really sounding good!

Stay tuned for more updates!!

Songs for Lent

As a worship leader, I always try to create song sets that consist mostly of songs that are praise of God and His greatness, and less about "us" or "me". Sometimes worship sets can have all songs about us and what we need, which isn't always bad, but shouldn't be the norm. As many leaders in the Vineyard have said, including Bert Waggoner and Don Williams, worship leaders are preaching the Gospel and teaching theology just as much as pastors and teachers are, we just do it with song.

But now we are in the season of Lent, which is commonly not observed or given much attention in the Vineyard or protestant churches, but our church is embracing this year. As a worship leader, I've had my radar up for songs that really deal with the themes of repentance, dying to self, and turning back to God. It means that some of the songs I will choose for my sets will be a little be more "me" oriented, but are songs that say to God, "I'm turning back to you, cleanse me God!"

I was sitting at my lunchbreak in the car, and I a song by Charlie Hines on the Vineyard Club CD, "Fascinated" really speaks this well. Here are the lyrics:

You wait in silence, You wait with mercy
You wait in love, Lord, You wait for me

You wait in patience
You wait with forgiveness
You wait in tears, Lord, You wait for me

And I can’t go on, have I gone too far
As I turn toward You I turn away
And all my sins You’ll take away
As I run to where I left You standing
I long to hear You say “welcome home”

You wait in joy, Lord
You wait with compassion
You wait with grace, oh, You wait for me

As I turn toward You I turn away
And all my sins You’ll take away
As I turn toward You I turn away
And all my sins You’ll take away
As I run to where I left You standing
I long to hear You say
I long to hear You say
I long to hear You say “welcome home”
No matter what I’ve done
How far from You I’ve run
I always hoped You’d wait for me

Not only are the lyrics excellent, but the song is beautifully written. I really feel like this is a song that I am supposed to add to our next service as we continue in this time of Lent.

Starbucks gets Wi-Fi right this time

Starbucks said Monday it will give customers that use its Starbucks purchase card two hours of free wireless access per day. After that, it will cost $3.99 for a two-hour session. Monthly memberships will cost $19.99 and include access to any of AT&T's 70,000 hot spots worldwide.

Yes, yes, yes! This is what customers have been clamoring for! I had TMobile Hotspot for a few months, but $30 a month to use the internet at Starbucks was far too expensive for me, and most people. This new deal with AT&T makes sense for the average person who wants to check their email while sipping on their beverage.

Is Diet Coke making me fat?

No, Diet Coke isn't making me fat, it's all of the pizza, tacos, and ice cream. But the Diet Coke habit I have might actually be doing more harm than good in my fight to control my weight.

Researchers did a study and found that rats who consumed sugar-free sweetners gained more weight than those who consumed real glucose.

The LA Times story said:

The study in the journal Behavioral Neuroscience found that the artificial sweetener appeared to break the physiological connection between sweet tastes and calories, driving the rats to overeat.

Essentially, we diet soda drinkers are training ourselves to constantly crave something sweet. Hmmm, not good.

Maybe I'll fast Diet Coke for Lent?

Just got home, I'm really tired....

Friday, February 8, 2008

I do this "blogging" thing late at night so that Melisa can fall asleep before I start snoring. Apparently the clicking of keys is music to her ears when compared to the roar of me sawing logs!

Anyway, we just got back tonite from playing a worship set with some friends as part of a "fundraising sendoff" for a couple that is moving to the Philippines to begin a church plant. It was great to be a small part of the night, and see the passion that this church has for missions, and to take the message of the Kingdom to the world. Exciting stuff.

But wow, 6AM was a long time ago, and my eyes are scratchy, and my body is worn out from hauling gear around. It's time to go to bed.

Tomorrow we are going to be working on Melisa's song some more with Milk and Billy-Boom-Boom (also known as my father-in-law). I think Milk has the Pro Tools tuned up and rockin' this time.

As I check around the net tonite, I see that the NASCAR season gets off to a start tomorrow with the Bud Shootout. NASCAR sure doesn't waste any time after the NFL is done to kick off their season, do they.

On a closing note, I'm bored with music. Who has a band that is rocking their world that I haven't heard yet?

Lent

Klampert posted his "Ash Wednesday" set-list yesterday, and I realized that we "Vineyard folks" don't generally observe this day in our liturgy. After reading the rest of his post, I wish we would. Klampert posted a message from his Bishop (Charismatic Episcopal) that really speaks into what Ash Wednesday and Lent are all about.

Bishop Craig Bates writes:

The Church calls us on Ash Wednesday to a holy season of prayer and fasting. This prayer and fasting is an ancient tradition of the church. This season will, in light of the love of Christ Jesus, enable us to make a serious self-examination and confess, with the intent of amendment of life, our sins. It is a time to seek the sacrament of reconciliation (confession) for self-examination must always be done with the knowledge of the assurance of forgiveness. This is not a time of accusation and condemnation but a time when we can lament our sins knowing we are loved and forgiven. For as John reminds us, “If we say we have no sin we deceive ourselves and the truth is no in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all un-righteousness. (I John 1.8-9) James tells us, “Confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed.” (James 5.16)

Ok, Ok.....time to suck it up.

So I've been an unrelenting critic of John McCain. I don't agree with the man, although I do respect his service to our country, both civic and military. His attempt to shove amnesty down our throats is still stuck in my craw, as it does with many conservatives.

But after hearing Mitt Romney's speech today, I realized how important it is that conservatives set aside their disagreements, and vote for McCain, unless some miracle third-party conservative somehow whips up a viable candidacy.

I know with McCain, that we will have a leader that is committed to national security, and won't appoint radically left-wing Supreme Court justices. Would it be another four or eight years of a Bush-like liberal Republican? Yes, it will be. It will be a lot like the Bush years in terms of policy. But better to have four more years of liberal Republicanism than the radical left agenda of a Hillary Clinton.

It's time to suck-it-up, and prepare myself to vote for McCain. It's the only choice I'm left with.

I sat down to write for the first time in two years tonite....

Wednesday, February 6, 2008

For a number of reasons, I decided to sit down at my desk with my guitar and try to write tonite. I've had this thing inside of me about writing lately, so I decided to give it a whirl.

After a couple of hours of banging on my guitar, I've got nothing. I guess it's not like riding a bike. I'll need to take some more time to get back into the swing of things. I realize that I haven't been living life with my "antenna" up, as Matt Redman refers to. Those antenna are constantly listening, seeings, watching for things that can be encapsulated in a song. Perhaps a message, a phrase, or something that is an interesting and new way of saying something about God, or to God.

If any of you out there feel led to pray for me, please do. I've let this gift slide for too long, and I feel like I have to rekindle the flame, so to speak.

The RIAA's devious dealings

Slashdot.com blogged a story today from HollywoodReporter.com that shows how devious the RIAA really is. The RIAA is lobbying to slash the royalties that publishers and writers receive for songs that are played or sold electronically.

Is
