No, Diet Coke isn't making me fat, it's all of the pizza, tacos, and ice cream. But the Diet Coke habit I have might actually be doing more harm than good in my fight to control my weight.
Researchers did a study and found that rats who consumed sugar-free sweetners gained more weight than those who consumed real glucose.

Essentially, we diet soda drinkers are training ourselves to constantly crave something sweet. Hmmm, not good.
Maybe I'll fast Diet Coke for Lent?

The study in the journal Behavioral Neuroscience found that the artificial sweetener appeared to break the physiological connection between sweet tastes and calories, driving the rats to overeat.

I have experimented a little with this, and I find that not only am I hungrier in the morning when I drink diet cola, I am hungrier all day. It seems quite counter-productive when I am trying to lose weight. I often wonder if I would drink the same amount of cola if I switched back to regular instead of diet. The big problem then is that I can't stand the taste of that syrupy stuff. I may just give up soda entirely, it's not like it is health food.
When I drink soda, I am back at the snack machine in an hour for M&Ms. When I drink only water, I don't go for the junk food at all. Has anyone else noticed this?
I think I have experienced the same thing.....it must be some sort of physio-psychological weirdness. You body tastes "sweet" but gets no calories....perhaps the body is preparing to take in the calories....but then no calories?
This, of course, is all very un-scientific.
I gave it up for lent, with off-days on Sunday (you can't make yourself miserable on a holy day), so I only had diet coke with lunch, surprisingly. Before lent, I'd drink a 12-pack in a 2-3 days. Thankfully, we didn't have any at home or my Sunday consumption would have been larger, but I made up for it by eating more cookies from James' V-day party at church. (Did I also mention I'm keeping a food diary for lent and not eating more than 1500 cal - cookies can't be a major diet item with that cal limit). The cookies I made are worth 320 a piece!
I thought of giving up "weekday TV", but with Auto Racing starting this month, I need to watch my racing. Does that count?
It depends, the rules are entirely up to you.
You could tape it and watch it on Sunday, if you wanted to really get away from the TV. While you are missing the race, you could think about why you are missing the race.
